Ramair open intake suitable for BMW M2 Competition F87 / M3 F80 / M4 F82 / F83 (S55)
Open intake kit with part type approval
If you are looking for an open intake kit suitable for the BMW M2 Competition F87, M3 F80 or M4 F82 / F83 with the S55 twin-turbo, you are usually comparing suppliers with a §19.3 parts certificate (where a modification inspection is mandatory) - or this Ramair intake with part type approval. The difference: for cars covered by the approval (particulate filter, dual-clutch gearbox, rear-wheel drive) the inspection appointment is dropped entirely - keep the documents in the car and you are done. The kit also fits cars with a manual gearbox or without a particulate filter, but those then need an individual inspection (see the road-legality notes).
The complete kit from Ramair - an established British manufacturer with decades of experience in performance air filters - is designed as a bolt-in solution for the whole S55 engine bay.
What the kit contains
- Complete pipework suitable for the S55 engine bay
- 2× dry Ramair Proram performance air filters (oil-free, washable)
- Heat shields with carbon covers - functional and good-looking
- All brackets and fixings - a complete bolt-in solution
- Part type approval as documentation to keep in the car
What the intake really does for your S55
- 30 to 40 % more air flow:The Ramair Proram filters deliver measurably more air to the twin-turbo than the factory enclosed airbox
- Faster boost build-up:More air volume at the inlet means a more direct response and shorter reaction times when the load changes
- A sporty intake sound:The distinctive intake roar comes through clearly in the engine bay and the twin-turbo becomes audible - nothing is muffled by an enclosed airbox
- Carbon heat shields:Protection from engine bay heat plus a visibly high-quality look under the bonnet
- Low-maintenance and long-lasting:The oil-free filters are washable and retain 100 % of their performance after cleaning - no costly replacement intervals
Part type approval - the regulatory advantage over a §19.3 certificate
Many competing intake kits on the market come with a §19.3 parts certificate. That sounds similar at first, but legally it means considerably more work:
- §19.3 parts certificate:a modification inspection under the StVZO (German law) by an approved engineer (TÜV / DEKRA / KÜS) is mandatory - which costs an extra appointment and extra money
- Part type approval:the successor to the classic ABE general operating permit. For the cars it covers (particulate filter + dual-clutch gearbox + rear-wheel drive) no modification inspection is needed - just keep the documents in the car and that is it.
Compatible vehicles - the S55 F family
Mechanically the kit fits every BMW with the S55 twin-turbo straight-six:
- Suitable for BMW M2 Competition F87 (S55, 411 hp, 06/2018-06/2021)
- Suitable for BMW M2 CS F87 (S55, 450 hp, 11/2019-06/2021)
- Suitable for BMW M3 F80 Saloon (S55, 431 hp) - including Competition (450 hp) and CS (460 hp), 2014-2018
- Suitable for BMW M4 F82 Coupé (S55, 431 hp) - including Competition (450 hp) and CS (460 hp), 2014-2020
- Suitable for BMW M4 F83 Convertible (S55, 431 hp) - including Competition (450 hp), 2014-2020
Maintaining and cleaning the Ramair filters
The Ramair Proram filters are completely oil-free. In practice that means:
- No sticky residue in the intake tract or on the mass air flow sensor
- No special maintenance with expensive filter oil is needed
- Clean with water → let dry → refit (recommended every 7,500 km or twice a year)
- 100 % of performance retained after cleaning
- Washable for life - no filter change every 30,000 km as with factory filters
Highlights
- Part type approval included - no registration for cars with a particulate filter and dual-clutch gearbox
- 30 to 40 % more air flow than the factory intake
- 2× oil-free, washable Ramair Proram filters
- Carbon heat shields against engine bay heat
- Suitable for the whole BMW S55 F family (M2 Competition/CS, M3, M4)
Fitting at FLOW DOWN® in Essen - or as a bolt-in DIY job
The Ramair intake is designed as a bolt-in kit: if you are technically confident and have done similar jobs before, the supplied instructions will see you through - standard tools are enough. If you would rather be sure, or want to combine the intake with an exhaust installation, workshop fitting at FLOW DOWN® in Essen makes it straightforward. We specialise in S55 and S58 set-ups in the Ruhr region.
Road-legality notes
Mechanically the kit fits all the S55 models listed above. The enclosed part type approval, however, appliesonly to cars with a petrol particulate filter, a dual-clutch gearbox and rear-wheel drive- which applies to the later S55 models. On those cars the intake can be used legally without registration; the approval documents are kept in the vehicle. The kit also fits cars with a manual gearbox or without a particulate filter, but those then need an individual inspection (§21 StVZO, German law) by an approved engineer. If you are combining it with an exhaust system, a downpipe or software tuning, it is best to clarify the right paperwork with us in advance.
