Does the Sportback centre section not fit the saloon as well?

No. The apron's lower edge sits differently and the radius to the corners runs flatter. On the 8Y there is a separate part per body style.

How do I tell whether I drive a saloon or a Sportback?

At the rear opening. The saloon has a separate boot lid, the Sportback a large tailgate with glass.

Does the part interfere with the parking sensors?

It sits below the sensors and does not cover them. During fitting we still check that the contact surface is even - cable ducts run there.

Does a lot of soot build up in the middle?

Somewhat, because the part sits directly between the tailpipes. On gloss black it shows more, but a damp cloth removes it without residue.
