On the S3, what is the difference between the hatchback and the Sportback?

Hatchback is the three-door, Sportback the five-door. The rear aprons differ, which is why there are separate parts. This one belongs on the three-door.

Does the original diffuser have to be removed?

No. The part is mounted onto the standard rear add-on, which stays on the car. That makes removal straightforward.

Does that fit an S3 8V from before the facelift too?

No, the part is cut for the facelift apron from 2017. For older model years just ask us.

Do the four standard tailpipes stay clear?

Yes, the cut-outs are designed for the S3's standard layout with four round tailpipes. With a retrofitted exhaust, send us a photo of the rear beforehand.
