Grail exhaust system suitable for Audi TTS Roadster 8S / FV – valved exhaust system

Open-top driving with the sound the 2.0 TFSI deserves

The Audi TTS Roadster 8S (internally also FV) is the open version of the sporty TTS - with 286 to 310 hp from the 2.0 TFSI, all-wheel drive and a fabric roof. If you drive with the roof down, you want to experience the engine; that is the whole point. Yet Audi keeps the TTS noticeably quiet from the factory. With the GRAIL valved exhaust system you get back the sound that suits open-top driving. With the roof down the system becomes the real reason you bought it - a sporty TFSI sound straight from the rear, unfiltered by a solid roof.

Hand-made in Germany from L304 stainless steel, with ECE type approval. So no registration is required on any EU vehicle with standard type approval.

Open-air sound with the roof down

With the roof down, the effect of the GRAIL system is noticeably more intense than in a closed coupé. The sound waves reach the driver's ears straight from the rear, without being filtered by a roof. In Dynamic mode with the roof down you get the unfiltered 2.0 TFSI character with pops on the overrun - exactly what a roadster should sound like. With the roof up the noise level inside stays comfortable, because the valves follow the driving modes.

With or without a particulate filter - both versions available

The system is available for Roadster models with a petrol particulate filter and for models without one. In the configurator you choose the version that matches your car:

  • With particulate filter:For TTS Roadster models with a factory petrol particulate filter (introduced gradually from around 2018). The filter stays integrated in the system - full ECE compliance, no registration required.
  • Without particulate filter:For older TTS Roadster models without a petrol particulate filter. Even clearer and stronger in sound, because nothing mutes the exhaust flow.

Two valves in series - why that makes sense on the roadster

In the TTS system GRAIL fitstwo valves one behind the other, in series. That matters particularly on the roadster, because open bodies react more sensitively in acoustic terms:

  • Valves closed:Both valves block the flow completely. You can drive through residential areas with the roof down without the neighbourhood noticing what you drive. Fully ECE-compliant and suited to everyday use.
  • Valves open:Both valves open the exhaust flow. With the roof down the effect is a level more intense than in a closed coupé - pure TFSI character straight from the rear.

Valve control via the Audi driving modes

Both valves are controlled by the factory Audi valve control of your TTS Roadster. You operate them as usual via the MMI:

  • Dynamic mode: both valves open - the full GRAIL sound
  • Comfort or Efficiency: both valves closed - restrained and ECE-compliant

Roadster or Cabrio - both mean the same thing

Audi officially calls the open version of the TTS the "Roadster". In everyday use people often say "Cabrio" as well. Both terms mean the same car. This GRAIL system fits the open body only - you will find the version for the closed coupé as a separate product in the shop.

Selection in the configurator

Before ordering you choose the following options:

  • Particulate filter status:With or without a petrol particulate filter
  • Downpipe connection:To the standard downpipe or an HJS downpipe
  • Exhaust tip colour:Brushed stainless steel or black

Not sure about the particulate filter or the downpipe connection? Send us the VIN via WhatsApp or the contact form - we will check before you order.

Downpipe connection - standard or HJS

  • To the standard downpipe:The standard choice for a TTS Roadster without a modified downpipe. The GRAIL system connects directly to the factory downpipe.
  • To an HJS downpipe:For drivers with an HJS downpipe fitted (common on Stage 2 or Stage 3 set-ups). The GRAIL system is made with the matching interface for HJS.

Exhaust tips - quad round, 100 mm

The system comes with the classic quad-tip look: four round 100 mm tips, sporty and bold at the rear. That gives the Roadster an unmistakably aftermarket appearance - fitting for an open-top car:

  • Brushed stainless steel:Sporty and elegant, with a refined look at the rear - especially good on light paint colours
  • Black:A matt black quad-tip look - understated yet bold, ideal in combination with a dark roof

Material and workmanship

Made entirely from L304 stainless steel, with CNC-machined components. The silencers and both valves are tuned in the GRAIL sound lab specifically for the 2.0 TFSI of the TTS - taking into account the roadster's particular sound radiation with the roof down. Flow-optimised pipe routing minimises back pressure when the valves are open. Both valves are machined from solid stainless steel, switch precisely and are designed for many years of use.

Highlights

FAQ

With the roof down the effect of the GRAIL system is far more intense than in the closed coupé. The sound waves are no longer filtered by the roof but reach your ears straight from the rear. In Dynamic mode you get the full 2.0 TFSI character with pops on the overrun - pure open-air acoustics.
No. With the roof up in Comfort mode the cabin noise stays comfortable - the valves are closed and the system silences cleanly. In Dynamic the sound becomes noticeably more present, but not intrusive. If you want to cruise relaxed, drive in Comfort and you will barely hear a difference from standard.
Both are in use. Audi officially uses "Roadster" for the open TTS, while people often say "convertible" - both terms mean the same car. This GRAIL system fits the open version of the TTS 8S whichever word you use.
Audi phased the petrol particulate filter in from around 2018. The exact status is on the invoice or in the registration document. If unsure, send us the VIN on WhatsApp and we will check for you.
With two valves in sequence the difference between quiet and loud is far greater than on standard systems. On a roadster that is especially useful - with the valves closed you stay unobtrusive in residential areas even with the roof down, and with them open the full 2.0 TFSI sound comes through. A GRAIL feature few competitors build this way.
Through your TTS Roadster's factory Audi valve control. Both valves respond automatically to the drive modes - in Dynamic they open, in Comfort or Efficiency they stay closed. Everything is operated through your car's MMI.
If you have an HJS downpipe fitted - common with stage 2 or stage 3 tuning - choose the HJS version in the configurator. The GRAIL is then built with the matching interface. A standard TTS Roadster without a downpipe modification stays with "to standard".
No. The TTS coupé has a different rear geometry because of its fixed roof. The TT RS Roadster has a completely different engine (the 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder). There are separate GRAIL systems for both in the shop.
