Grail exhaust system suitable for Audi RS Q3 F3 (DNWA) – valved exhaust system

The only five-cylinder SUV with RS character - now with the sound to match

The Audi RS Q3 F3 is a genuine rarity - a compact performance SUV with the iconic 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder under the bonnet. The same engine that made the RS3 and TT RS cult cars sits here in a raised SUV body. The result: 400 hp, all-wheel drive, everyday usability - and the unmistakable 1-2-4-5-3 firing rhythm most five-cylinder fans know from the RS3. But what Audi holds back acoustically from the factory, through the particulate filter and standard silencers, is considerable. The GRAIL valved exhaust system brings the full five-cylinder character back - without removing the factory petrol particulate filter.

Made entirely from L304 stainless steel, hand-made in Germany. ECE type approval - so no registration is required on any EU vehicle with standard type approval. Ready to drive as soon as it is fitted.

Two valves in series - a wide range between quiet and loud

On the RS Q3, GRAIL uses a design solution that is rarely found among competitors:Two valves are fitted one behind the other, in series. That makes the difference between cruising and full load far greater than on standard systems with just one valve.

  • Valves closed:Both valves block the exhaust flow completely - the system stays comfortably within all prescribed noise limits. You can drive through 20 mph zones, residential areas and villages without a second thought. Fully ECE-compliant.
  • Valves open:Both valves open the exhaust flow completely - the full five-cylinder sound with no compromise, including pops on the overrun. Exactly what the RS Q3 needs as a five-cylinder SUV.

Valve control via the Audi driving modes

Both valves are controlled by the factory Audi valve control of your RS Q3. You operate them just as you are used to in your car:

  • Dynamic or RS mode: both valves open - the full GRAIL sound
  • Comfort or Efficiency mode: both valves closed - restrained and ECE-compliant

The RS Q3 with GRAIL - what changes acoustically

From the factory, the DNWA engine in the RS Q3 is heavily muted by the particulate filter and the standard silencer design. With GRAIL the high-revving five-cylinder character returns - particularly in Sport mode, with clearly audible pops on the overrun. In Comfort mode the system stays restrained, which is a clear advantage in a family-friendly SUV. The result: all the benefits of a compact five-cylinder SUV, with the sound to match its RS character.

Selection in the configurator

Before ordering you choose:

  • Exhaust tip colour:Brushed stainless steel or black

Exhaust tips - stainless steel or black

  • Brushed stainless steel:Classic and sporty, with a refined look at the rear - a good match for the elegant SUV stance of the RS Q3
  • Black:An understated yet bold look - a good match for the black package or dark wheels

Material and workmanship

Made entirely from L304 stainless steel, with CNC-machined components. The silencers and both valves are tuned in the GRAIL sound lab specifically for the DNWA five-cylinder in the RS Q3 - taking into account the taller body and the slightly different sound radiation compared with the RS3. Flow-optimised pipe routing minimises back pressure when the valves are open. Both valves are machined from solid stainless steel, switch precisely and last well in everyday use.

The particulate filter is retained

The factory petrol particulate filter of the RS Q3 stays integrated in the system - the GRAIL system does not remove it. That keeps full ECE compliance, means no registration is required and avoids any issues at the annual inspection or a roadside check. Even so, thanks to optimised silencers and the valve control, the system brings back the full five-cylinder character that the filter heavily mutes from the factory.

Highlights

  • Specifically suitable for the Audi RS Q3 F3 with the DNWA five-cylinder
  • Two valves in series - a wide acoustic range between quiet and loud
  • ECE type approval - no registration required within the EU
  • The factory particulate filter is retained in the system
  • L304 stainless steel, hand-made in Germany

Ordering with fitting at FLOW DOWN®

FLOW DOWN® is an official GRAIL partner in the Ruhr region. When you order with fitting, you get our fair deposit model:

  • 50 % deposit when you place the order - we then order the system from GRAIL
  • As soon as the system arrives at our workshop, we arrange the fitting appointment with you

Important:The deposit model applies only when fitting is booked and is possible by advance payment / bank transfer only. PayPal and other payment methods are not accepted for this.

Swiss suitability certificate

On request you can obtain a Swiss suitability certificate for the GRAIL system for a surcharge. If you are interested, simply contact our support team.

Compatible vehicles

  • Audi RS Q3 F3 (DNWA, 400 hp) - from 2019

Not suitable for: Audi RS Q3 Sportback F3 (different body, with its own system), Audi RS Q3 8U (previous generation), Audi Q3 F3 (not an RS, different engine and exhaust system), Audi RS3 8Y (same engine, but different exhaust geometry). There are separate GRAIL systems for each of these models.

Scope of delivery

  • GRAIL valved exhaust system suitable for Audi RS Q3 F3 (in deiner gewählten Endrohr-Farbe)
  • Two integrated valves in series
  • Exhaust tips in brushed stainless steel or black (as selected)
  • Mounting hardware
  • ECE type approval as documentation to keep in the car

Road-legality notes

No registration required thanks to ECE type approval - valid for all EU vehicles with standard type approval. The factory petrol particulate filter stays integrated in the system and ensures full ECE compliance. For imported cars with a different operating permit, please check the registration requirements before ordering.

FAQ

The RS Q3 is one of the few SUVs with the iconic 2.5 TFSI straight-five - the engine that made the RS3 and TT RS cult cars. With the GRAIL system you get the full five-cylinder character with its characteristic 1-2-4-5-3 firing order, in a body that still works for everyday and family use.
No. The petrol particulate filter stays fully integrated in the system - which is also why it needs no registration entry and stays fully ECE compliant. Removing the filter would be legally problematic and is not done. Even so, the system brings back the five-cylinder character the filter mutes so heavily from the factory.
With two valves in sequence the difference between quiet and loud is far greater than on standard systems with a single valve. Closed, the system stays comfortably within all noise limits - fully ECE compliant and easy to live with in an SUV. Open, you get the full, unrestrained five-cylinder sound.
Through your RS Q3's factory Audi valve control. Both valves respond automatically to the drive modes - in Dynamic or RS they open, in Comfort or Efficiency they stay closed. No remote, no extra module, no modification needed.
Both models share the DNWA five-cylinder, so the character of the sound is basically identical. Because of its taller body and different rear structure the RS Q3 radiates sound slightly differently - in detail it sounds a shade fuller. GRAIL matched the system precisely to that body's acoustics.
No. The RS Q3 Sportback has a different rear end with a coupé-like line and a correspondingly different exhaust geometry. There is a GRAIL system of its own for the Sportback in the shop.
No. The RS Q3 8U (2013-2018) has a different engine and exhaust geometry from the F3 model. There is a GRAIL system of its own for the 8U - just contact support if you are interested.
The lower back pressure and flow-optimised routing make a small power gain possible. The main effect, though, is on sound and response. If you want a measurable increase, combine the system with a software upgrade - it is ready for stage tuning.
